Whole Home vs. Portable Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers remove humidity for healthy homes or offices. They are also excellent for removing the damp smell after flooding of any kind.
dehumidifiers for the whole home help control mold and mildew allergies, mold and mildew odor removal, indoor relative humidity control, air moisture removal and moisture damage prevention. These whole house dehumidifiers can dehumidify up to 2200 sq. ft. of open space.
Whole house solutions will be more expensive than a truly portable dehumidifying unit. You will be looking at a cost in the range of two to three thousand dollars minimum, with installation. However, these dehumidifiers are also an investment in your home and an asset when you are selling.
On the other hand, portable dehumidifiers can go where you go. You can get models as small as a few inches square for small spaces (perhaps a travel camper) to units that are much larger. You'll need to shop with your needs in mind.
The newest "mini" units can also be very handy in very small spaces. The problem of dampness and humidity in a windowsill can be very hard to solve without a small, portable unit.
Let's look at an example. In our home, we have blinds in all the bedroom windows. In the space behind the blind, humidity is a serious problem. Last winter, we had mold and mildew in all our windowsills. A great solution is the new small, battery-powered units that are only designed to dehumidify a space of around a couple square feet. Mount the unit behind your drapes or blinds and only use it when the window coverings are closed. It can save you a lot of problem and a lot of cleanup.
Today, you can also buy portable size units that can dehumidify a large amount of space. They can cost as much as several hundred dollars, but they leave your options open as to where you use it. Renting a cottage for a week? Take your dehumidifier with you.
