Wild Blueberry Cake Bars by Bakers Delight

An allergy product and perfect dessert

I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but since I discovered my gluten intolerance I've had to decide whether eating yummy treats is worth the inevitable discomfort.

Then, when my son was born and we discovered that he actually had a gluten allergy, we banned the majority of baked goods from the house –- unless they were gluten-free. Gluten-free treats have been a challenge to find, as these allergy products often lack the taste and texture I associate with desserts.

I particularly miss cakes –- the moist and light ones of my childhood. When I was growing up, my favourite aunt always baked our birthday cakes. She used to make a layer cake with icing on the outside and sweet preserves between the layers.

So, when I saw Wild Blueberry Cake Bars that actually contained blueberry filling in each individual cake, I couldn't resist. After all, blueberries are my favourite berries!

These cakes are free of gluten, soy and dairy –- the three biggest allergens. That was a sure sign that this product was exactly what we needed for our household.

Each cake bar is individually wrapped, which makes them perfect for a packed lunch.

When my son and I tried the first bar, we split one. We'd been disappointed before, and neither of us wanted to eat a whole one if it wasn't as good as it looked. Fortunately, it was as good as it looked, and even better! The four bars in the package were gone in no time.

Each cake bar is 50 grams, and will set you back about 200 calories. But even if you are counting calories, that's a pretty reasonable indulgence.

There are other flavors of these cake bars, besides blueberry. However, although all flavors are gluten-free, not all are free of dairy and soy. Do keep in mind that you should read the ingredients in detail - this product does contain a preservative, and these can sometimes cause problems for folks with chemical sensitivities. Also, this allergy product contains corn flour and cornstarch, so it won't be suitable for those with a corn allergy.
