White Rice Bread by El Peto
Really good bread and allergy product
I take it back - everything I've said about the El Peto brand in the past, I take it all back!
Recently, I was forced to buy El Peto White Rice Bread because my son was out of bread, and the store didn't have Glutino, my preferred brand. The only Glutino bread the store had was the corn bread, and it contains milk which is a no-no for my son. I noticed that the El Peto bread had a new label and bag, and I cynically thought that it was probably the same old product in a new package. But we needed bread, and so I bought this allergy product, against my better judgment.
It turns out El Peto has updated their bread recipe, and it's definitely for the better! The bread has a much lighter texture, and it toasts up great. The label tells you right away that the product is peanut-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, milk-free, egg-free, cholesterol-free and trans fat-free. Honestly, what more could you ask for in an allergy product?
The new bread recipe contains water, gluten-free flour mix, palm oil, glucose, salt and gluten-free yeast. That's it! However, even with so few ingredients, the new bread is a great improvement from the company's original white rice bread. It has a much nicer consistency than previous El Peto offerings.
Remember though, if you have corn allergies, this bread is still not for you. The gluten-free flour mix is a mixture of cornstarch, white rice flour and guar gum.
Most gluten-free breads or bakery goods are in the frozen food cases of your natural food section in the grocery store, so you'll likely buy this one frozen. Generally, we toast our bread straight from frozen, however we have used this bread defrosted, and found that it was okay to eat that way as well. Just defrost for about 30 seconds in a microwave on high power.
Most recently, we made French toast using this bread. Surprisingly, it turned out really nicely as a warm, nourishing breakfast. With just a touch of maple syrup - yum!
If you've been avoiding El Peto as I have, give them another try. It's worth it.
