Missing Apple Jacks?
Try out Glutino’s new gluten-free cereal
I don’t know if you ever ate “junk” cereal when you were a kid, but I did. One of the cereals that sometimes graced our breakfast table was Apple Jacks. Now this cereal tasted nothing like apples, but it did have a yummy cinnamon flavour that was devoured in our household.
Flash forward 35-years. I’m now a mother with a child who has gluten and dairy allergies, so you can imagine that cereal flavours have been few and far between. While I don’t want to feed my child “junk,” it would be nice to give him an occasional treat at the breakfast table.
I was cruising the shelves at the local supermarket, in the new “natural foods” section (I’m a health food section addict who is always checking out what might work for us with our allergies), and I noticed new breakfast cereals from Glutino. This being a brand that I trust, I decided to look more closely.
The picture on the front of the box was a cereal in the shape of Cheerios, and the flavour was listed as “apple and cinnamon.” I knew that this was likely to be a hit. Here was cereal with a “cool” shape, and with no gluten to boot! I read the ingredients to be sure there weren’t any hidden problems. Everything looked good. So, I went home with the box under my arm.
Well, not only did my son end up eating this cereal, I did too! It has a nice crunch and the apple and cinnamon flavour is quite nice. Unlike Apple Jacks, it really does have some apple flavour, and the sweetness is provided by cane juice and honey.
If you have corn allergies, this cereal is not for you. It’s also not appropriate for people with severe allergies to tree nuts, sesame, soy or milk as the box states that there could be traces of these ingredients.
Ingredients listed on the package include corn flour, corn starch, cane juice, dried apples, canola oil, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate and d-alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), baking powder, apple and cinnamon flavour, honey and salt.
