When you need something crunchy – Glutino!
I missed crackers the most when I found out that I had dairy and gluten allergies. That lovely duo of allergies virtually put the kibosh on anything crunchy in my cupboards back in the 1980’s and 90’s when I first discovered that I couldn’t eat these foods. Allergy products were few and far between at that time. One of the nicest things about dealing with allergies now is that there are so many options available, and new ones emerging all the time.
Take Cracker Flax for instance. This is a new product by Glutino, and these unusual little crackers will satisfy your cravings for a good crunch. They are also completely free of soy, dairy and gluten - three of the biggest food allergens.
Cracker Flax are made from flax seeds, so there’s no added oil because they make use of the fact that flax seeds have a lot of healthy, essential fatty acids of their own. In fact, there’s no trace of flour of any kind in these crackers.
I tried both the plain version and the tomato-onion flavour. The savoury goodness of the tomato-onion is a real treat for the taste buds. I’ve tried these with antipasto (except for cheese, of course) and they were exceptional. For those of you who can enjoy dairy, I would imagine that these would also be sensational with an herbed cream cheese. I’ve eaten the plain Cracker Flax with almond butter or a bit of jam – which are equally tasty, crunch-inducing alternatives.
My five-year old son, who is also inclined to things with crunch, quite liked these crackers as well. However, keep in mind that the crackers have a robust nutty taste of their own from the flax seeds. As a result, if you are considering this for a child, be prepared to have them try these more than once before they get accustomed to the strong flavour.
I’m not sure exactly how they do it, but with a base of flax seeds, they make a crunchy cracker using “dehydration.” You see, Cracker Flax are not baked; the batter is dried so the crackers retain all the goodness of the flax seeds that would be lost if they were made at higher heat temperatures. They are prepared in “sheets” rather than in individual round or square cracker shapes. You simply break off the size of cracker that you want, and enjoy it plain or smeared with your favourite topping.
Not only do they deliver taste and crunch; you also get a lot of nutrition in Cracker Flax. The nicest thing is that all the nutrition is already there, without sacrificing taste.
Ingredients listed on the package of Tomato and Onion Flavour include water, whole flax seeds, tomatoes, onions, garlic, sea salt and garlic powder.
